Hands-on science

TUM at the Zamanand Festival

As part of the AHA Super Science Summer Club, TUM was right in the thick of a diverse program of science activities and hands-on experiences at the Zamanand Festival in Munich over the weekend, demonstrating just how exciting and accessible research can be. The turnout was impressive: On Sunday alone, over 50,000 people stopped by the booth. Many visitors were inspired by topics related to research, innovation, and TUM—a great shared success!

At the AHA Knowledge Islands, exhibits, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and talks brought science to life for a broad audience. Everyone was invited to try things out, do crafts, and interact with the researchers. TUM’s topics ranged from health and sustainability to robotics and space exploration. Short presentations were also part of the program and facilitated direct dialogue with visitors.

The turnout was impressive: On Sunday alone, over 50,000 visitors stopped by the booth. More than 6,000 people engaged in conversation with researchers in the AHA tent. Many were inspired by topics related to research, innovation, and TUM.

Among the highlights that drew particular attention were the TUfast Eco Team’s muc 022 race car, the eConversion Cluster’s interactive booth featuring a quiz and a ping-pong game, the hands-on activities of the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz and the Public Science Lab, or the cooking demonstrations on gut health.

As part of AHA – The Science Communication Hub, the TUM’s participation was realized in close collaboration with numerous partner institutions. Together with LMU, Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM), Bundeswehr University Munich (UniBW), the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and Max Planck Institutes, it was possible to bring Munich’s cutting-edge research into public spaces and take science directly to the streets.

Successful Groundwork: The Young Academy’s StreetScience Format

The AHA Super Science Club builds on the successful StreetScience format developed by TUM’s Young Academy. Since 2019, the Young Academy has brought TUM researchers out onto the streets on several occasions—first at the Street-Life Festival, then at the Zamanand Festival.
