Hans Kuss took up the post of spokesman of the voluntary presidential advisory committee for scientific staff personnel matters in 1995 and continued to hold this post long after his retirement in 2002 until the beginning of 2008. Prof. Dr. Klaus Böning developed the concept for the reactor at the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II). At the heart of Prof. Böning’s design is the new research reactor’s innovative compact core, the only one of its type worldwide. This novel configuration makes it possible to achieve a particularly high neutron output in a very small space while keeping levels of heat generation to a minimum. Prof. Böning’s design also set new safety standards in reactor technology. This convincing new scientific and technical approach has gained international recognition and made it possible to realize the national high power neutron source in Bavaria. From the earliest days of its conception through to its final completion, Prof. Böning played a major role in shaping this research facility of great significance for natural science, technology and medicine.
